This image was posted online with Jane Mayar’s article, “Outsourcing Torture,” which was published in The New Yorker in 2005. By using a very recognizable photo of the torture at Abu Ghraib and superimposing it as the Statue of Liberty, this is making the argument that this (torture of Iraqi prisoners) is what the US has turned to now and the military sees it as a protection of freedom. The Statue of Liberty has been, throughout history, a huge symbol around the globe for the United States of America. Now, with everything the war has made us become, the peaceful woman raising the torch no longer represents America. The artist is claiming the tortured Iraqi better represents the US. I think this will be a strong image to use in my paper as I will use it to support my claim that the torture in Iraq is undermining our image as a democratic nation.
Yes like you said “torture in Iraq is undermining our image as a democratic nation.” This is a powerful image and it does reflect a lot about the American Democracy and the American Freedom. Could it be that the American soliders are trying to take adventage of their freedom. Also the down fall of the torch has made a clear claim that the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World does no long enlightes the world and represent its values in terms of what happened with the torturing. And that U.S. does not have the right to have this enlightment symbol, which holds American values, beliefs and most of all equality and freedom. Which at Abu Ghraib was torn into pieces.
Awesome image that makes strong logical appeals!!! The U.S. American Flag waving in the background in juxtaposition with the statue of torture sends a clear message. Also the bright sunny background with tortured victim in foreground makes it impossible not to see hypocrisy of it all….Laurie
